Death and Rewriting

Continued from The Military?

So I kept writing Luthiel’s Song after college.

It was amazing! I’d finally found a character I loved to write about. Her world unfolded before my eyes like a vast tapestry. I was in that giddy phase when a writer begins to really create. There was such a sense of possibility and so many things seemed open to me.

But the world outside of my imagination was a dire place for a young writer. (more…)

What is the Luthiel’s Song series about?

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

Well I just received an excellent question from a friend on myspace. The question was — “what is the Luthiel’s Song series about?” I don’t think it’s one I’ve answered at all to any degree of satisfaction. I mean, I’ve talked about the first book to thousands of people, but I haven’t really mentioned much about the series itself.

Since we’re ramping up production on “The War of Mists” — the second book in the Luthiel’s Song series, I think it’s a great time to talk a little bit about the larger story.

So for you all and for the young man who asked the question, here is my answer. I hope it is a good one! (more…)

Friday, July 20th, 2007

On the World of Oesha, dragons grow only as they dream. So without a proper dragon sleep, it will remain small.

Melkion is in such a state. Though he’s hundreds of years old, he’s still quite small for a dragon –not much larger than an eagle. (more…)

Continued from Opportunities, Obstacles

While still at college, and much to the chagrin of my professors, I decided to do a crazy thing. I went off and I joined the infantry.

The US Army National Guard.

Robotic Dance

Sunday, July 15th, 2007

Futurists have often predicted an age where machines would become as capable as humans at everything from dancing, to thinking, to interacting with the world.

Is anyone not astounded by the amazing rate at which robotic technology has progressed in the past decade? We now have cars, aircraft, and underwater vehicles that can drive themselves. Prosthetic limbs with intelligence and the internet is being used by some as a vast oracle in an attempt to get a glimpse at the future.

But as strange as an oracular internet may sound, I don’t think it’s as haunting as seeing machines do what humans can. Moving with an almost uncanny perfection, these robots, gracefully dance:

Does anyone else find this to be a bit haunting?

Chalk up another victory for the machines.

Holocene Ending?

Monday, July 9th, 2007

According to recent scientific studies, polar ice and continental glaciers are at risk of melting at a much more rapid rate than expected. One prominent scientist — Peter Wadhams — recently issued a scientific report claiming arctic sea ice could completely dissappear one summer about 13 years from now.

Furthermore, James Hansen, another reputed scientist, this one from NASA, reported in his “Climate Change and Trace Gasses,” the slow climate change models produced at the IPCC don’t match with geological data.

According to Hansen, the geological record shows that ice at the poles does not melt in a gradual fashion. Instead, it suddenly flips from one state to the next. Often resulting in sudden and drastic geological changes. (more…)
