Why a Female Hero?

May 5th, 2009

I’ve always had a deep admiration for strong female characters. When I was young, I fell in love with Snow White. I know it sounds silly but I did. Later, my respect shifted from Anderson’s “Little Mermaid” to many of the female heroes in anime.

I think it had something to do with my mother. She was born, in 1947, with a condition called spine bifida. Read the rest of this entry »

Lady of Beasts

May 3rd, 2009

The birds were the first to see her and hundreds — from the tiniest flitswa to the greatest eagle — flew to join her. There were thousands more, and she could barely see the sky through the thick of them. It didn’t take long for the other animals to notice her arrival and, of these, Othalas was the first. A Myth of the Elves — The Suns of Oesha

May 2nd, 2009

When Lunen came of old to dance
With glimmers through the night
A fire burst upon the black
Our star: Soelee the bright

Her birth was like a tear in space
Through which an ember gleams
Then blazes all about with flame
Within a wreath of beams

Who wants to be an author? A writing craft Q&A.

April 30th, 2009

Recently, a Luthiel’s Song reader asked me to answer a few questions for her gifted program school project. For my part, I was delighted to pitch in. As I was working on the answers, I began to think that they might also be helpful to other writers or just useful to those interested in the craft. In my opinion, there are probably as many ways to become an author as there are authors. Regardless, I’ll be sharing some of my experiences in the following paragraphs. I hope they help you! The Official Title for Book III: The Nightmares of Winter!

April 28th, 2009

Dear friends, we have finally settled on a title for the third installment of the Luthiel’s Song series — The Nightmares of Winter!

In Nightmares, Luthiel’s adventure continues along a very dark and dangerous path. The title, I feel, is apt for a story that takes a plunge into darkness.

(SPOILER ALERT!!! IF YOU HAVEN’T READ THE WAR OF MISTS, DON’T READ BELOW THE FOLD!!!)

Poem written to the girl in Algebra class — as requested by the students of Lanier Middle School

April 25th, 2009

Hey guys! Just wanted to say thank you for the warm welcome and fantastic visit yesterday. I hope you all are having a wonderful weekend and that those of you who picked up a copy of Luthiel’s Song are enjoying it! In any case, I won’t make you wait any longer. As requested, here is the poem written to the girl in Algebra class:

What feeling!
Once you struck me with your eyes!
Is what I see as true, as pure?
Or is a dream denied?

Dare I to speak?
Or even whisper?
Can I touch the feeling?
No!
Yet rather would I stand here dazed,
Than to awaken from believing!

Is what I see a dream?
Or dare I ask you — is it true?
For what your eyes were telling me,
Is simply that,
I love you.

By Robert M. Fanney

Best wishes to all! Hope you enjoy!
